This book has been written with a focus on the ecosystem including platform owners and app developers as the platform emerges as a new business model. First, the book discusses the rise of the platform ecosystem, the core concepts, and the nine principles of the platform market. Furthermore, it describes how platform business differs from product and service businesses as well as the value proposition from the perspectives of platform owners, app developers and the final users. Also, the book introduces a four-lens framework for spotting opportunities to transform products and services into platforms.

Next, the book deals with platform architecture and governance, the two gears of the motor of platform evolution. It explains the role of architecture in partitioning and integration of innovative work between the platform owners and app developers. The architecture of a platform and apps must be appropriately governed to realize innovation. Furthermore, it describes the multifaceted concept of platform governance that includes pricing, control, and decision rights. It goes onto explaining operational and strategic metrics of evolution over the different time frames in the platform market, as well as the real option thinking for coping with technical and market uncertainty. It then explains five discrete operations that are the foundations for the evolution of platform and apps.

The bookdescribes how the interplay of technical architecture and governance directs the evolution of the platform, its apps, and entire ecosystem, followed by an explanation on the evolution method of platforms and apps to develop and sustain a competitive advantage over time.It explores the effects of such alignment of architecture and governance on resilience, scalability, and coherence in the short term; adhesiveness, platform synergy, and extensibility in the medium term; and consolidation, sustainability, and mutation in the long term. The emphasis is on providing information to the readers, both platform owners and app developers, thus help them to make practical decisions based on the understanding of the short-term and long-term evolutionary consequences.

The book concludes by summarizing the core ideas developed in this book and extends the ideas to business ecosystems across a variety of industries beyond software platform ecosystems. It also provides agenda for the managers of other product and service industries to discuss opportunities to nurture platform-like business ecosystems.
