A study has shown that over 1.2 million jobs would disappear in Korea in next 20 years due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Pi-Touch Institute, a research foundation, at a press conference held on the 26th at Grand Hyatt Seoul, made a statement that about 1.24 million jobs would disappear just in Korea alone in next 20 years as a result of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. According to the study, the number of non-routine cognitive jobs such as software engineers would increase by about 330,000 jobs due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. On the other hand, the number of routine jobs such as parts assembler and non-routine manual jobs such as restaurant employees are expected to decrease by 580,000 jobs and 980,000 jobs, respectively.
According to the regional employment survey of the National Statistical Office in 2015, the number of non-routine cognitive jobs would increase by 140,000 jobs in the next 5 years but the number of routine jobs and non-routine manual jobs each would decrease by over 170,000 and 370,000 jobs, respectively, also in the next 5 years.
In particular, the greatest change is expected in the jobs of 40~50 year old workers. Director La, Jung Joo explained, “Routine cognitive work, compared to non-routine manual work, is harder to substitute with a computer. It is noteworthy that the number of non-routine manual work, compared to routine work, would undergo the greatest decrease.”
